a summer cold

I'm sick.

My little LadyBug lovingly shared her cold this week.  And only with me.  Gee, aren't I lucky!  I'm usually the only one NOT to get an illness when it spreads around the family.  I'm the one left standing to take charge and play nurse.

My ears are blocked, and my throat is filled with razors.

I can barely hear, and speaking isn't really worthwhile, as it hurts too much to make any audible sounds.

The silence around me and from me is frustrating to me... but perhaps not so frustrating to others.

I'm learning how to communicate using basic sign-language, which is great for LittleBee as she studied Auslan last year, and now has an opportunity to practice.

I've taken up knitting again.

I'm already bored of daytime television, and it's only been one day.

I have no desires to do anything other than snuggle on the couch and sip hot tea with honey.  Hubby is teaching LittleBee how to cook eggs.  LadyBug is playing nicely and eating toast too.  This I can get used to.

We've got a big day here Wednesday... LittleBee is heading off to school. More about this later.  But for now, I'll crawl back under my blankie, and hope this cold passes quickly.

kids in the kitchen

She was bored.  She seems to be bored a lot of the time, and as I recall, it is a part of being 9 (really nearly 10).  Being bored on the school holidays comes with the territory right?  So she decided to bake.  And (am I crazy?) I let her have reign of the kitchen.

Together with her little sister, they set out to bake shortbread biscuits.  With a little assistance for the hard jobs, you know like working the Thermomix, they've done pretty well for themselves.  Fetching the ingredients, reading the recipe through, turning on the oven.  To her credit, Miss 9-reallynearly10 has taken charge gracefully, allowing her little sister to get her hands dirty and together they have made some fun.

There's been a lot of discussion while the little women have been trying to weave their culinary magic...

"Stop eating the dough little Miss or there wont be enough to eat later."

"No, you can't paint them until they are cooked."

"Oh, how am I going to control you."

"You put it in a ball then you squash it."

"Make a little one for me."

"Please I mix it?"

"Mum, can you fix this please?"

"I finish now" (takes off apron) "Oh, nooooo, I want to wear it"

They've mixed all the food colouring into the frosting, and it's a delightful? shade of green.  I think you would call it green.  A little bit like bird poop, but I promise it's edible.

I really don't think these two will be ready for dinner tonight, with all the sampling they have done along the way.

And the finished product???

all decorated and ready for eating

They look, um, different.  They taste very sweet, and are oddly moorish.  All that sugary goodness is surely tempting, no matter what colour it is.  So if you happen to swing by for a cuppa over the next few days, you may be offered a couple of these with your coffee... please don't let that stop you from visiting!

There you have it... the kids in the kitchen, creating sugary fun and messy memories (yes, Mumma had to clean up!)

numbers numbers numbers

I'm hot, sleep deprived, in need of a whole lot of coffee and down time today... along with a whole lot of other mothers this morning I am sure.  As I sit and try to recoupe enough energy to hang the washing up and do the countless other chores that are beckoning me today, these numbers swirl around in my mind...

degrees at 2am

minutes of sleep I had last night, or rather at 4:00 this morning, when the temperature finally dipped below 30 degrees!

cups of coffee is all I've had this morning... but hopefully there are lots more to come.

sweet but grumpy girls at my feet, playing together intermittently, and inadvertently reminding me that it's been 70 long days since we said goodbye to Noah...

of Les Miserables viewing in store for me and my brother this afternoon

... and one tired Mumma, who is very thankful for good coffee, movie dates, cool breezes and girly giggles to get her through what could otherwise be a very rough day!

a christmas snapshot

here's a little selection of what we got up to over our four full days of festive feasting...

there was a lot of very fine food... fun with family and friends... loads of presents, everywhere... a cute baby to cuddle... lots of loving and giggles and wonderful memories made...

... and remembering our two beautiful sons who we missed over this christmas time, and always.
